Mission and Vision Statements A Mission Statement defines the company’s business, its objectives, and its approach to reach those objectives. A Vision Statement describes the desired future position of the company. Unfortunately in most situations, Mission and Vision statements have become a senior management exercise in minutia and word selection. We're not interested in attending another meeting where the benefits of one preposition is debated over the benefits of another. If however, you are interested in using your Mission and Vision statements as they were originally intended...we can be of service. Mission and Vision statements first became popular years ago when McNeil survived the tylenol scare. You may remember back in 1982, when McNeil Consumer Products, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, was confronted with a crisis when seven people on Chicago's West Side died mysteriously. Authorities determined that each of the people that died, had ingested an Extra-Strength Tylenol capsule laced with cyanide. The news of this incident traveled quickly and was the cause of a massive, nationwide panic. These poisonings made it necessary for Johnson & Johnson to move quickly and consistently at every level, in order to save the integrity of both their product and their corporation as a whole. Because of the Mission statement, everyone in the organization understood how senior management expected employees to act. The company's mission statement had put customer safety above financial concerns and profit - everyone understood - and at every level acted accordingly. As a result, the public didn't loose confidence in the product despite an onslaught of media coverage. Mission statements are more of a process than a document. Done right, they may be born in the boardroom, but they live at every level in the organization from R&D to those in customer contact. We can help you establish your corporate culture.
