Human Resource Policies and Procedures

Everyone sees the world differently - through their own set of eyes.  Once perceived, everyone colors what they see with their own set of values.

For example, if a petty cash clerk with 20 years with the company were to take five dollars from the petty cash till and put a note in the cash box that said; "I took five dollars for cab fare to get home."  For some it would be OK, for others grounds for termination.  If an employee takes a sick day, the day before scheduled vacation, is it OK or grounds for discipline or maybe affects the sick pay or vacation pay?  Can an employee fail to work overtime because it conflicts with school work or another job?

People issues are very rarely black and white - almost always shades of gray.  Ask five employee supervisors/managers to decide what to do in almost any given situation and you get different answers.  Some will even fail to address the issue at all, and that becomes a precedent for the future, as well.  The only certainty, is that one way or the other, a precedent will be set with either Senior Management intervention or without. In essence, that is why an organization needs Human Resource Policies and Procedures.

Employee Handbooks provide guidelines and paint the company culture in broad strokes.  Handbooks cover topics in general terms and are written to last a couple of years without revision.  Policies and procedures are detailed, dynamic, and allow Senior Management to instruct everyone how to look at any particular situation and react.

When the organization is inconsistent handling people issues and Senior Management is bogged down handling situations on a case by case basis it's time for a Policy and Procedure manual.  When that time comes, we can be of service.
