The purpose of the handbook is to clearly communicate information that is relevant and important to employees. In addition, it provides management an opportunity to educate employees about company products, customers, commitment to the community, competitors, etc. The goal is to establish a positive image as an employer, responsible citizen, provider of goods and services and a contributor of economic benefits to society. As strange as it may sound, a top drawer employee handbook is written as much for those that don't read them, as for those that do. Beyond a legally compliant professional presentation, you should be able to just flip through the handbook and get a favorable impression of the company. That is what most people will do - just flip through the pages....management may read every word, but employees will scan the pages and only read a section when they have a question. If you want new hires to read the handbook, give it to them well before they start work. Once they start, the handbook will get a quick perusal and then it's destine for the home file/bookcase. Pictures, graphics, and formatting are as important, and possibly more important, to the message as the written word. People respond to visual presentation - a picture of a happy employee has more impact than any statement about your employee management philosophy. You may be committed to providing an excellent work environment, and stating it in your employee handbook is important, but pictures, graphics and formatting is what will have the most impact in delivering the message. We'll design an employee handbook that fits your company, industry, and communicates your message on a myriad of different levels. Beyond the legal considerations - beyond defining employer/employee rights and responsibilities - beyond communicating the company's culture....our work product provides value.
