Critical Human Resource Support

When you ask your Human Resource people, "how are things going?"  If they respond "Great" or "Fine"  - - Things probably aren't.

If however, they respond what category would you like me to tell you about?  And, they can provide specific metrics and plans to address deficiencies, your HR people probably have a handle on the issues.  Then the concern should be, do they need help - to help me with my transition as the New CEO.

What follows is a short list of what you should expect, and there is one quite a bit longer list available at your request.

The Short List:  The Absolute minimum

The HR department should be able to identify the organization's top performers and those that need development or replacing.

Tell you the retention rates and how they compare.

How many vacancies and how long it's taking to fill them.

They should be able to tell you what's important to the staff - the current employee concerns and issues.  You should have a current employee satisfaction survey to use as a benchmark.

Wages and Benefits, are they competitive and is the company getting the right "bang for it's buck."

Human Resources should be able to tell you anything and everything you want to know about the people side of the business.  From the specific minute detail, like how each of your direct reports best assimilates information (visual, auditory, kinetic) to what are the foreseeable labor and management challenges and opportunities.

More important they should be able to provide unbiased factual information unflavored by their functions past successes and failures.

Check out the On Line Store for other types of metrics and dash board indicators.
